Message from Next Year's President...

Hi friends!

So, I know that you might be thinking about next year and how you can get more involved in your student’s life at Don Juan…but you just don’t know what you might want to do! Well, here are some ideas to get you started! Please keep in mind that you can pick anything on this list and become the “chairperson”…or you can “co-chair” these events with a friend or two! The kids really love to have us involved (until they hit middle school!)…and it’s a great way to find out more about what happens at our school, especially during such a crazy transitional time (with the budget cuts!)

Plus, I hear the next PTA president is kinda fun! ; )

We still need the following positions filled! I’ve put a few quick descriptions, but if you want more info on any of these, I can forward you the “official” job descriptions!

Treasurer – Anyone with “Quickbooks” experience will find this an easy task! There are monthly board meetings to attend (usually just an hour long!)…and just 4-5 “Association” meetings a year to attend. If you’d like to ask our previous Treasurer for more specific details, we can get you in touch with Kristin Jacobs, who has served as our Treasurer for the last 2 years! She’s been so organized that the next person will be able to pick right up where she left off!

Executive VP – This position is great for anyone who’d like to be a part of the PTA Board, and can be available for events/meetings that the President can’t attend.

Financial Secretary – helps the treasurer with checks, bank deposits, etc.

Corresponding Secretary – This position handles written communication for the PTA; thank you notes, notes to community members, etc.

Red Ribbon Week Chairperson – One week (well, this year it was just 3 days!) of Safety and Drug Awareness is what this week is all about. It is just one week – and doesn’t take a lot of time to plan…usually takes place in October.

Art Masters Chairperson – Once a month, the students get to experience a lesson in fine arts…they learn about artists and their techniques, and get to apply what they have learned in a workshop. The Art Masters chairperson makes sure that paper is ordered and cut to size, and distributed to the classes.

Daytime Assembly Chairperson – Don Juan has had some wonderful events planned for the students, and we’d like to see this continue. This chairperson is responsible for helping plan assemblies for the students, which have included Imagination Machine, Safety Workshops, BMX exhibitions, professional dance groups and orchestra performances, etc. There are usually just a handful of these events throughout the year!

Family Fun Nights Chairperson – I know that the Don Juan families have really enjoyed our family fun nights, and we need someone to help plan these! Some of our favorites have been our annual “Pajama Story-Time Night”, Ice Skating, Movie Night, and of course…AutumnFest (which unfortunately was cancelled this year due to the fires – but we’d like to bring it back next year!), etc… Usually about 4 a year!

Hospitality Chairperson – Helps plan “Kiss and Cry” Donuts & Coffee for Kindergarten parents, organizes donations of food, etc for special events (such as this year’s Veteran’s Day Celebration” breakfast!

Please let me know if you have any questions…It will be a fun year – but we definitely need your help to make it that way!

Thanks so much,

Colleen Moody
08-09 PTA President
